About our School

Mrs K Anstee - Headteacher

Gateway is a wonderful place to be! Our pupils are happy, resilient, well-adjusted children who thrive in their learning journey. We believe in ‘challenge for all’ within an atmosphere that nurtures children and enables them to persevere when learning is tricky.

Our curriculum delivers all subjects through topic based learning, enhanced with trips out and visitors in. Our children enjoy learning and we offer a wide range of activities for them to explore.

Our pupils become independent learners, taking on responsibilities to support our community. Our year sixes, in their black uniforms, elect House Captains and take on support roles across the school. Outside of lessons, our children participate in local sporting events, sing with our very busy choir and take part in music lessons. .

We are proud of our recent 'Good' Ofsted outcome and welcome you to read our full report, available on the 'Monitoring and Ofsted' section of our website. We warmly welcome visits to school - I look forward to showing you all Gateway has to offer.

Gateway Primary School is in an inclusive, warm school where everyone is valued. Our School is situated in Netheravon Close, off Wycombe Way, in Carterton. It is a Community Primary School for children in the 4+ to 11 years age range. Gateway Primary School was opened in May 1965 under the name of Brize Norton Aerodrome School. In January 1966 this became Royal Air Force Brize Norton County Primary School. The change to 'Gateway' took place in January 1970 following a competition among the pupils to find a suitable name for the school.

The school has strong links with the RAF due to our close proximity to RAF Brize Norton.

RAF Brize Norton is the largest RAF Station with approximately 5,800 Service Personnel, 1,200 contractors and 300 civilian staff. The Station is home to the RAF's Strategic and Tactical Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) forces, as well as host to many lodger and reserve units. With its mixed fleet of aircraft, RAF Brize Norton provides rapid global mobility in support of UK overseas operations and exercises, as well as AAR support for fast jet aircraft both on operations and in support of UK Homeland Defence. Many of our pupils have experienced life in other countries with their serving families and this brings a wealth of different experiences to our school community. We help our children to foster a sense of belonging in their new community and explore our roots and own family heritage through our curriculum. Transition in and out of school for families posted plays a big part of our Family Support Workers role and we pride ourselves on our pastoral offer.

We also have strong links with the town of Carterton and local towns and villages, and our pupils and families participate in many community events such as the Christmas lights parade. The town mayor is a regular visitor and we enjoy working alongside the other local schools. We take full advantage of our location - taking trips to nearby Oxford, the Cotswolds and beyond. Our whole school annual theatre trip is a real highlight.

Our School is currently maintained by the Oxfordshire Education Authority and is part of the Carterton Partnership of Schools - working collaboratively to offer Carterton Children the best start in education.
